Year of Project: 1994 – 1996

Scope of Project: Interior architectural design, buying trips, and purchasing for a Five Star Resort Hotel ranked among the top fifty resort hotels in the world by Condé Nast Traveler magazine.  Areas revitalized include:  Lobby, Bar, Restaurant, Villas, Suites and Studios.

Special requirements: The Hotel Cabo San Lucas was the second hotel built in the Cabos region and there was a lot of history there. The owner instructed me to “make it look like a museum”, and the long time repeat guests all told me “don’t change it, just make it look better.”

Design Approach: The hotel was built out of stone dynamited from the site and the architecture was so strong and honest that there was only one approach: respect it, study it, breathe it and it will all come.

Conclusion: This hotel was my undergrad degree, a study of the Mexican art and artisans trying to transmit to the guests that the indigenous tribes are alive and well not just in the museums. Thanks to the owner and his intent, which has served, me well through many years of working in Mexico.
